Our client is a leading mobile phone operator, the second largest telecommunication provider in Hungary by both revenue and subscriber market share, and among the best 10 4G LTE network worldwide. The legacy core systems of this telco service provider served its needs well for over two decades. However, this setup was now limiting it from being more innovative and providing a better customer experience in the connected age. Looking towards the future, they undertook a comprehensive BSS transformation project to replace outdated legacy systems with a complete BSS stack modernization and industry-leading architecture on the AWS cloud platform to optimize customer services, launch products faster, and reduce operating costs

Situation

The BSS transformation involved multiple interconnected modules, requiring meticulous coordination and testing of data flows between various components. Therefore the testing phase of the BSS transformation project encountered various challenges and required a more sophisticated approach than the traditional model. Just name some of the key challenges that were encountered during the testing phase of the BSS transformation project are:

  • Complexity and Interdependencies: The BSS transformation involved multiple interconnected modules, requiring meticulous coordination and testing of data flows between various components.
  • Integration challenges: Integrating the new BSS platform with existing legacy systems posed challenges in terms of data mapping, data migration, and ensuring seamless end-to-end processes.
  • Inadequate business process coverage: E2E testing validated only process segments, not the entire business processes/lifecycle scenarios posing quality and timeline risks on UAT.
  • Test Environment Stability: Ensuring the stability and availability of the test environment, especially during peak testing periods, was crucial for executing comprehensive test scenarios. Managing the test environment, including hardware, software, and network configurations, posed challenges in terms of availability, stability, and configuration consistency

Task

The telecommunication provider engaged us for specialized expertise and experience in BSS transformation projects. ALZAMO provided access to professionals who possessed in-depth knowledge of telecom domain-specific testing challenges, best practices, and industry standards. Our expertise in BSS transformation projects ensured the application of proven methodologies, tools, and techniques to optimize testing outcomes.

Our tasks involved, but not limited to:

  • Ensure the successful implementation of the BSS transformation, a comprehensive testing strategy was devised, encompassing the following key elements:

  • Test Planning: A detailed test plan was created for SIT, E2E and UAT, defining the scope, objectives, deliverables, timelines, and resource allocation for each testing phase.

  • Test Case Design: Comprehensive and reusable test cases were designed to cover all functional requirements, including end-to-end processes, user interfaces, and data integrations.

  • Test Data Management: Realistic test data sets were generated to simulate various scenarios and test the system's ability to handle different customer profiles, products, and services.

  • Test Execution and Defect Management: Test cases were executed, and defects were logged, tracked, and prioritized using a defect tracking system. Defects were retested after resolution to ensure their successful closure.

  • User Acceptance Testing (UAT): UAT involved engaging end-users to validate the system against their business requirements and ensure its readiness for production deployment.

  • Performance Testing: Load testing and stress testing were conducted to evaluate the system's performance under varying workloads and to identify any bottlenecks or performance issues.

Action

To ensure the successful implementation of the BSS transformation, a comprehensive testing strategy was devised. The recommended and adopted risk-based quality assurance approach and optimisation of tests through impact based testing accurately assessed business and technical risks, such as:

  • Complexity and Interdependencies: A comprehensive integration testing strategy was implemented, focusing on identifying and resolving complex integration issues and interdependencies.
  • Test Environment Stability: Test environment management processes were implemented to address availability, stability, and configuration consistency challenges.
  • Time Constraints: The risk-driven approach enabled the testing team to prioritize testing activities based on the criticality and impact of potential risks
  • Timely delivery: Milestones are met by prioritising test activities according to risk

Results

Testing played a vital role in the successful implementation of the BSS transformation project. Engaging ALZAMO by adopting a comprehensive testing strategy, overcoming challenges, and incorporating lessons learned, played a crucial role in the successful testing of the BSS transformation project. The specialized expertise, independent perspective, and process improvement contributions of our testing services significantly contributed to the project's overall success.

Benefits derived from the engagement of ALZAMO’s QA service:

  • Enhanced Testing Coverage and Quality: Increased testing coverage, including critical functionalities, integration points, and performance aspects. Our specialized expertise and industry knowledge enabled comprehensive testing, reducing the risk of functional gaps, data inconsistencies, and system failures. Our testing approach contributed to higher overall system quality.

  • Timely Delivery and Risk Mitigation: By leveraging ALZAMO’s dedicated resources and experience, the transformation project was able to meet project timelines and deliver the upgraded BSS platform on schedule. The risk-based testing approach implemented by us helped identify and mitigate potential risks early in the project lifecycle, reducing the likelihood of critical issues impacting the production release.

  • Objective Evaluation and Process Improvement: We provided an unbiased evaluation of the BSS transformation, highlighting areas for improvement and suggesting process enhancements. Our independent perspective led to valuable insights, enabling the telco provider to refine their processes, address vulnerabilities, and enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the BSS transformation project.
